'Sitcom'. What does it really mean?
Sitcom is short (an acronym) for 'Situation Comedy', in which a normal person shows or explains their life (usually a weird or unusual life) in a Comic way.
Some notable situation comedies are:
Not Going Out (2006-)
Outnumbered (2007-2014)
Miranda (2009-)
The Royle Family (1998-2000, specials 2006-12)
Only fools and horses (1981-2003)
Open all hours (1973-1985)
Not Going out: The Characters
Lee
Portrayed by: Lee Mack
Notes: Main Character, Lucy's Lodger
Lee is an Ice Cream Van driver who does barely anything.
He is a Lodger in Flat No.17 in a apartment building on the London Docklands.
Lee makes lots of jokes, and finds it very hard to be serious, which sometimes embarrasses his friends, Lucy and Tim.
It was revealed in Series 6 episode 3, titled "Therapy", that Lee was not planned and that he was the cause of his parents splitting up
Timothy 'Tim' Adams (Series 1-5)
Portrayed by: Tim Vine
Notes: Lucy's Brother, Lee's friend, Daisy's Boyfriend
Tim is Lee's friend. Tim is much more sensible and grown up than Lee, so they make a weird (but still good!) pair.
Tim is Lucy's Brother. Tim is older than Lucy.
Tim works as an accountant for the local council.
After series 5, Vine quit the show, so the characters told us he left to go to Germany (in the show) for work reasons.
Lucy Adams (Series 2-)
Portrayed by: Sally Bretton
Notes: Lee's Landlady, Tim's Sister
Lucy is a Landlady, who partly owns the flat (along with Tim) that Lee lives in.
Lucy is the favourite child out of her and Tim.
Lucy worked in Zurich, Switzerland for a few years as a business woman, before coming to London.
She is very Confident and successful.
Daisy (Series 2-)
Portrayed by: Katy Wix
Notes: Tim's Girlfriend.
Daisy is a very dim witted woman. She pitches into conversations
with little knowledge. She is very gullible. Her silliness and lack of intelligence clearly embarrasses Tim.
Kate (Series 1 only)
Portrayed by: Megan Dodds
Notes: Lee's Former landlady, Tim's Ex-Girlfriend.
Kate is Lee's former Landlady. She is Californian.
She broke up with Tim (her ex-boyfriend) after she
found out he had almost developed a relationship with
a 23 year old girl named Emily.
Barbara Petrietskivadorski (The Cleaner) (Series 2-3)
Portrayed by: Miranda Hart
Notes: The Cleaner
Barbara was a cleaner who ran under the name 'Metropolitan Cleaning Services UK'. She was the CEO, but also the only employee.
She cleaned the flat in series 2 and 3, but had bad habits of breaking stuff and doing nothing.
Barbara left at the end of series 3, she was presumably sacked for poor effort.
Frank
Portrayed by: Bobby Ball
Notes: Lee's Dad
Frank is a major recurring character. He is Lee's dad.
